Rheumatology

Rheumatology is the diagnosis and treatment of rheumatism, arthritis and other disorders of the joints, muscles and ligaments.

Here at New Hall Hospital our qualified and experienced rheumatology consultant, Dr Smith, works as part of a multidisciplinary team utilising the specialist skills of his expert colleagues as required, to provide continuity of care and cover for all element of a patient’s rheumatology treatment under one roof.  The team comprises of consultant radiologists and radiographers, chartered physiotherapists, podiatrists and podiatric surgeons and, consultant orthopaedic surgeons.

Dr Smith will investigate, diagnose and manage a wide range of rheumatology conditions including: osteoarthritis, inflammatory arthritis (rheumatoid arthritis and gout), osteoporosis and connective tissue disorders. As well as the elderly, he sees many patients with sports injuries working closely with our chartered physiotherapists.

We offer diagnostic testing, advice and education on the management and prevention of rheumatology conditions to ensure the best quality of life possible.  Early diagnosis and the prescription of suitable treatments has been found to considerably improve many rheumatology complaints and, in some cases bring them completely under control such as arthritis and osteoporosis. Often we can diagnose your rheumatic condition based on a clinical examination and your history alone, and your appropriate treatment can then begin promptly.
