Gastroenterology

Gastroenterology is the study of the normal function and diseases of the gastrointestinal tract (GI tract) that’s comprised of the oesophagus, stomach, small intestine, colon and rectum, pancreas, gallbladder, bile ducts and liver. Your digestive organ system transports and digests food, absorbs nutrients and manages waste.

New Hall Hospital offers an extensive outpatient and inpatient gastroenterology service including luminal gastroenterology (problems inside the GI tube) and hepatology (diseases that affect the liver, gallbladder, biliary tree and pancreas).

Our consultant gastroenterologists have extensive experience in the management of diseases of the GI tract and liver. They hold an NHS consultant post and are registered on the specialist register for surgery at the General Medical Council (GMC). They have regular private clinics at New Hall Hospital offering patients convenient appointments and they work as part of a multidisciplinary team of skilled nurses, colorectal surgeons, bariatric surgeons and specialist dieticians.

New Hall Hospital offers many gastrointestinal endoscopy services to investigate, diagnose and treat gastroenterology conditions including:

  •          colonoscopy for the large bowel
  •          gastroscopy for the oesophagus and stomach
  •          flexible sigmoidoscopy for the rectum and lower bowel
  •          video capsule endoscopy to see inside the whole GI tract including the small          bowel (previously impossible to see adequately).

Common problems we see include: dyspepsia (indigestion), diarrhoea and constipation, abdominal pain, GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease also called acid reflux or heartburn), peptic ulcers, viral hepatitis and IBS (irritable bowel disease/syndrome).

Many gastroenterology conditions are chronic and patients often require long term monitoring and treatment. Inflammatory bowel diseases (Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis), Barrett’s oesophagus (damaged cells lining the lower oesophagus), Celiac disease, ulcers, chronic liver disease and digestive cancers are some examples.
